5.0 out of 5 stars

Tim is a great lawyer - won my claim in just a few months even though I know disability usually takes a couple of years. Tim went out of his way to meet me (at a McDonalds by my house ha ha) when my car broke down and I couldn't come to his office and he spent almost two hours talking to me that first day and helping me understand my case. Every time I talked to him, he treated me like a friend and a equal. He's a good guy and he knows his stuff. and never made me feel like just a client.

On review of my notes from this appointment, this was a prospective client who missed an appointment for a free consultation at our satellite office location (where we rent space by the hour) on a Wednesday but showed up unexpectedly on the following Wednesday. Assuming she simply had the wrong date for the appointment, I explained that she could reschedule or I could see her when my other appointments for the day were over if she'd like to wait, but that I would have limited time to discuss her case if she did so. She elected to wait and I do not recall how long our meeting was, but I believe it must have been substantially longer than five minutes because I have over a page of detailed notes in an MS Word document from that meeting. I regret that there was apparently some confusion regarding the date of the appointment, but I am confident that I was generous with my time and gave full and proper attention to this consultation.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
