Law Offices of Jeffery M. Leving, Ltd., in Chicago, Illinois, is a nationally prominent family law firm with a hard-earned reputation for protecting the rights of fathers, children and families of all types through litigation and negotiation.

Our founding attorney, Jeffery M. Leving was named one of "America's Best Lawyers" by Forbes Radio. He is an accomplished divorce and family law attorney and a sought-after spokesman and advocate for fathers' rights. In 2012, President Obama awarded Leving the National Lifetime Call to Service Award for his work in advocating fatherhood. He is co-author of the Illinois Joint Custody Law as well as the Illinois Virtual Visitation Law, Right to DNA Testing Notice Law, and Unlawful Visitation or Parenting Time Interference Law. On April 26, 2012, the Illinois House of Representatives honored Leving "for his work in safeguarding the rights of fathers and protecting the welfare of children and families in this State" and for his "hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of Illinois" by adopting Resolution No. 995. The Illinois House of Representatives resolved that Leving be presented with a copy of this Resolution "as a symbol of our esteem and respect."

In 2012 the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago Kent College of Law awarded Leving with its Professional Achievement Award for outstanding achievement in the legal field. He has been featured on numerous national and regional television shows and publications. He is also the author of an Amazon #1 best-seller, Fathers' Rights, as well as the critically acclaimed books Divorce Wars and How to be a Good Divorced Dad. Leving is founder and chairman of the Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood (www.responsiblefatherhood.illinois.gov/), a state commission established by the Illinois legislature to promote the positive father involvement in the lives of children.

For over 30 years, fathers and families, including well known professional athletes, politicians and entertainment personalities, have sought Leving's help in seemingless hopeless battles. The world was watching when Leving helped reunite Elian Gonzalez with his father in Cuba with the support of Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

Leving has assembled a team of unwavering attorneys who are committed to his mission of protecting fathers' rights and assuring fairness in family law. Many of the firm's attorneys have received significant awards and accolades for their work, including the President of the United States Service Award, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children Award of Merit, and the Domestic Relations Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County Award of Recognition. Our attorneys have also been honored by their peers as leaders in their field and have served as advisors on important government commissions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
