I had been recommended by an Air Force JAG to seek counsel from a few local attorneys of my choosing to determine who would be best suited for me. After Mr. Hartley returned my call (the only of the three to do so), I met with him for a free consult. While I didn't immediately retain him, I did immediately know he was going to be the only one I needed to meet with. From start to finish (5 months), Mr. Hartley was always at my fingertips. I always felt like I was the only client he had, though I knew that was far from the truth. I could call, text, or email him with my concerns and he would always respond. He may not tell you what you want to hear, but you need to realize that he definitely knows what he's doing and he's going to shoot straight with you. This stuff isn't cheap, and he's not doing charity work, but he's going to be fair with his time. You're both investing a lot in this...you in your significantly emotional, life changing event and hard-earned money--and him in his professionalism, long days and weekends that don't pay him any overtime! In the end, Mr. Hartley and his professional staff got me a fair result that I'm satisfied with. Divorce is never easy, but Mr. Hartley helped me make the best of an undesirable situation and I can definitely say that as circumstances change in the future and necessitate further adjustments to my decree, he'll be my first phone call!

I hired Mr Hartley for my divorce, which would involve custody of my children. Mr Hartley has been very responsive and on top of things! He always responds and forwards any information he receives to me very quickly. You can tell he is very passionate about his job! My main concern in my divorce was my children and after just a couple visits with Mr Hartley I could tell he understood where I was coming from in the way he talks about his own children. I would highly recommend Mr Hartley to anyone who finds themselves in this situation!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
