The partners at Aguirre & Severson LLP are committed to fighting the injustices facing our clients. Our firm emblem is a sword inscribed with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. " This symbol was given to our firm by a successful businesswoman whose business was the victim of a hostile takeover. After we won her case she honored us with this important symbol, and we adopted it as a symbolical representation of our commitment to using law to fight the injustices our clients face.

Our commitment to justice is inspired by examples like President Abraham Lincoln and the Dred Scott decision. In March 1857, seven out of nine Justices on the Supreme Court declared no slave or descendant of a slave could be a U.S. citizen and therefore could not challenge their status as slaves. Abraham Lincoln did not accept the Supreme Court's decision in the Dred Scott case as the final word: "But we think the Dred Scott decision is erroneous. We know the court that made it has often overruled its own decisions, and we shall do what we can to have it overrule this. "

President Lincoln put an end to slavery with the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Not all of us can become president or pass amendments to the Constitution, but we can and should work to correct the injustices of our society. For those who we take on as clients we are devoted to vindicating their rights and correcting the injustices they face.

We have learned that the smallest family to the largest corporation can be the victim of injustice. Working with a team of lawyers we helped the seventh largest city in the United States rid itself of a $100 million judgment that was obtained outside legal precedents. Our lawyers have prosecuted organized crime cases, antitrust cases, and investor protection cases. We have recovered the losses of victims of pension fraud and Ponzi schemes.

When Cesar Chavez passed away during a civil trial in Yuma, Arizona, one of our partners led the legal team that saved the United Farm Workers Union from financial ruin. One of our lawyers is a national leader of public pension reform. He was commended by the Wall Street Journal for "setting off an alarm that voters across America need to hear."

Our lawyers have defended police officers from civil rights law suits and represented racial and ethnic minorities in voting rights cases.

We represent real estate developers who were victimized by fraud, and we have sued some of America's largest banks, insurance companies, accounting firms, and law firms for fraud and unfair and unlawful business practices.

We work on complex derivative financial product cases, employment law cases, construction defect cases and product liability cases.

Our lawyers have brought and participated in cases to clean up major bodies of water, to recover from discharges of toxic waste, to enforce environmental and planning laws and to save fragile vernal pools.

We have represented municipal government, public interest citizens' groups, businesses, savings and loans, equity funds, judges, retirement funds, real estate agents, airport baggage handlers, community planning groups, members of the armed forces, members of Congress, peace officers and fire fighters.

One of our partners has been a leader in bringing open government and disclosure of public records in Mexico and Latin America. His writings on the subject have been published by WestLaw.

We do criminal defense in cases in which prosecutors have overreached and to ensure that our system of due process is protected.

Our lawyers are licensed in states from California to New York as well as in U.S. District Courts, U.S. Appellate Courts and the United States Supreme Court.

We listen to our clients' needs and concerns and then go to work to develop and execute litigation and trial strategies aimed at correcting the wrong visited upon them. We believe in legal research, fact investigation (one of our partners is a certified fraud examiner), and we are deeply committed to scholarship.

We study history, biography, management, logic, statistics, modeling and mathematics to enhance our effectiveness as lawyers and problem solvers. We use a sophisticated set of computer programs, websites and investigative techniques in building our clients' cases.

We all have families and children and understand the pressures of balancing family responsibilities with professional duty. Our lawyers are also active in public and community affairs at the local, state and national level.

Our attorneys have attended Harvard University, California Western School of Law, BYU Law, Arizona State University, Iona College and U.C. Berkeley School of Law.

We love meeting new clients and deeply appreciate the opportunity to be of service to others.

Please contact us, so we can arrange a private meeting for you with one of our San Diego civil business litigation lawyers, at no cost or obligation. During this appointment you will have an opportunity to discuss your circumstances and learn about your legal rights and the options available to you.

For your convenience, we accept evening and weekend appointments.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
