Onondaga County Criminal Defense Attorney

With over 35 years' experience, The Law Office of George Hildebrandt in Syracuse, New York, takes criminal defense work seriously. Super Lawyer's selection for 9th consecutive year and AV rated by Martindale Hubbell, I want to ensure that each client I defend is treated fairly and kept abreast of the laws, systems, and opportunities that influence their case. If you have been charged with a crime such as DWI, drug trafficking, embezzlement, homicide or money laundering, contact me today.

My Approach

Preparation – Thorough preparation is the key to successful criminal defense. Starting from the ground up, I meticulously investigate your circumstances and the alleged criminal behavior to gain a thorough understanding and to know exactly where we stand.

Experience and Skill – My experience has strengthened not only my skills in court, but also my knowledge of state and federal law. Acquiring these qualities does not come merely through study, but through practice.

Dedication – I have spent my entire legal career as a criminal defense attorney helping clients keep their criminal record clean. The challenges and opportunities associated with being a criminal defense lawyer have given me enormous satisfaction, and motivate me to work my hardest on every case I handle.

Trial Experience – I have tried hundreds of criminal cases over the last two decades. While not every case goes to trial, I prepare each one as if it will. This preparation has often resulted in cases being won outside of court, through motions to suppress evidence and confessions, making motions to dismiss or securing rulings limiting unfavorable evidence.

Personal Attention – When you hire a lawyer to represent you, the last thing you want is to be passed between paralegals and attorneys. I handle every case personally. I return telephone calls and emails promptly, and always keep you advised on what is going on with your case. Being charged with a crime is a stressful ordeal – I work to alleviate that stress and give my clients the information they need to move forward with confidence.

Succeeding – Many cases are won by avoiding trial altogether – by successfully bringing motions to suppress evidence and confessions, making motions to dismiss or securing rulings limiting unfavorable evidence. Further, critical advantages are gained during trial through providing the court with innovative and favorable requested jury instructions, anticipating the prosecution’s proof in advance, and using the rules of evidence and criminal procedure to gain every advantage.

Success at trial and success in avoiding trial requires the knowledge and confidence that come with having tried hundreds of criminal cases in state and federal courts (throughout New York and before many different judges), a thorough knowledge of the law, and the willingness to work hard, investigate and research.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
