0.5 out of 5 stars

I used the internet to do a search for Contract lawyers, and this firm popped up. I called, and when they answered, I told them the above sentence and asked if the internet lied to me, and I was promptly hung up on. Now, I may sound like I am in sales, because I used to be. But I was not trying to reach them about their cars extended warranty - I was calling because I was in need of a contract lawyer. I called back immediately, and it went to the IVR where it listed different lawyers. I picked one that was on the name of the firm (assuming it was a partner), informed them of what happened, and told them the person answering the phone needed some remedial training in customer service; after all, why hang up on someone when they could be a prospective client? I received a call the next day, and I believe it was the lawyer that I left a message for. His words: "We do do contract law, but we're not interested in working for you." Apparently, he was offended by my voicemail, claims the person who answered the phone has worked for him for over a decade, and he has never had an issue with her before. Her record has been broken. Here is the thing. If a company treats prospective clients in this manner, I fear how they treat current clients. We had a few words, and then I promptly told him ORC 2917.21 and hung up. If you don't want to work with me, that's fine. If you want to hang up on people, that's fine too; after all, it is your law firm. However, in this day & age, with social media, reviews are not uncommon; favorable, and unfavorable. While I may not be an "influencer" with millions of followers, if anyone asks me if I know a lawyer - for ANY issue - I will be sure to steer them clear of this firm. Very unprofessional behavior.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
