Law Firm Overview

Randi Susan Klein has been in private practice since she was admitted to the California Bar in 1991. She spent the first eight years of her practice in Northern California in the San Francisco Bay Area.During that time, she represented clients in a variety of civil and criminal matters. The civil portion of her practice included landlord/tenant, consumer bankruptcy, juvenile dependency and family law. The primary focus of her practice was on juvenile dependency and family law matters.

Ms. Klein relocated to Southern California in May 1999. Since that time she has concentrated her practice on family law and on per diem work for civil litigation attorneys.

Family Law

Ms. Klein currently practices family law in Los Angeles County, with an emphasis on cases that involve child custody disputes, visitation and time share arrangements. One of the factors that sets Ms. Klein apart from other family law practitioners is her background in juvenile dependency. Dependency cases involve children who have been abused and neglected and placed in the foster care system while their parents go through rehabilitation. Accordingly, one of the most crucial decisions made early on in dependency matters, is the placement of these children in foster care homes or with suitable relatives during this transitional period. Where these children are placed contributes significantly to whether or not they ultimately reunite with their biological parents, remain in long term foster care, are placed with legal guardians, or are adopted.

Ms. Klein's background in dependency matters has translated well into her current family law practice. It provides her with a unique perspective on custody disputes, which other family law practitioners may not possess. Thus, in addition to her private practice in which she represents both mothers and fathers, she has also been appointed by local judges to represent children in family law cases that involve complicated custody issues.

Court Appearances and Per Diem work for Trial lawyers

In addition to her family law practice, Ms. Klein also works on a contractual or per diem basis for trial lawyers, who practice real estate, personal injury, business, employmentand collections law. The contract work consists of taking and defending depositions, and covering court appearances, bench trials, motions and ADR proceedings. Hiring Ms. Klein enables the lawyers for whom she appears, to remain in their office, meet with clients, and cultivate new business. It also saves them the time and expense of commuting across town for routine or more time consuming court appearances.

Ms. Klein is located within walking distance of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. She appears in that court on a regular basis and is known by many of the local judges. Thus, she has a good working relationship with the judges and their staff.

In addition to her experience as a practicing attorney, Ms. Klein also clearked for the California Supreme Court and the California Attorney Generals Office while attending law school. Thus, she possesses both litigation and honed writing skills.

Continuing Education

Ms. Klein regularly attends continuing educational courses through the Los Angeles County and Beverly Hills Bar Associations, as well as the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles (CAALA).

In addition, she regularly attends and participates in workshops and seminars put on by The Trail Advocacy Project (TAP) of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
