My Dad is very hard of hearing, and also just didn't think any of his documents needed updating. But he had a mix of old and older documents, and Janet Smith helped us sort them out. She updated the ones that needed updating so we could better help him, and in her clear, patient way, she explained to him why a few simple changes were needed. Because his hearing is so poor, he often misses out on important conversations, and I especially appreciated her efforts and her success communicating with him!

Julia was Awesomeness! I'd recommend her to anyone needing a Winning Team. Anyone needing a VAPO, she's the one to call. Wonderful Firm. It was a pleasure to work with them.

My partner and I thought our existing documents were good enough and just needed some tweaking and a fresh eye to ensure congruence among the various provisions. We worked with Katie Peterson who carefully reviewed the docs and shared with us the reasons why they should be updated and re-done, as well as informing us about some docs we should have but never even considered! All of our questions (and we had a lot!) were patiently answered along with her basis to support her responses. We now feel relieved that we found the NELG and specifically Katie. And the cost of the services are reasonable and well-deserved.

I consulted with Katie Peterson of the NW Elder Law Group, initially to gain an understanding of my duties as Power of Attorney for my elderly mother. She conducted a thorough review, asked questions, combed through my documents and advised me about conducting my duties according to the letter of the law. She was experienced, kind, professional and responsive. A few months later, I needed to hire Katie again to assist in dealing with the unfortunate involvement of APS in my mother's affairs. Katie took immediate action, representing my interests in a strong, experienced manner, keeping me informed at all times of all communications, processes, and statutory issues as she handled them, and truly controlling the situation from the miserable beginning to the positive ending. I strongly recommend Katie Peterson, she is a fantastic advocate.

After talking with 5 different elder law attorneys and adult protective services 3 times over the last two years, I finally found Janet Smith at Northwest Elder Law Group. After all that frustration and hearing, "you don't have a case because she's his wife" the last is truly the best. In hindsight after all the frustration & sadness knowing my sweet brother was not being cared for properly, Janet helped expose financial exploitation, isolation, abandonment, mental abuse and a host of other violations by my brother's caregiver. I had no idea there are RCW codes for ABUSE OF VULNERABLE ADULTS - google it! It is an eye opener and a good starting point. That coupled with Janet's help we are headed closer to ensure my brother is taken care of properly in a loving environment. After all the damage that has been done, we will pick up the pieces left to move forward. Huge Thank you to Janet & her assistant Katherine Williams - two blessings in our life right this very minute. Skip the rest - go to the best - Northwest Elder Law.

Unethical! Will be reported to the bar. Drug the estate out to continually bill for it. $25,000 for a clear cut will? Sure, they fired Kathleen, but my family was still ripped off!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
