A+ service from start to finish. Having never had the experience of hiring a lawyer, I didn't know what to expect. Bertelson Law far exceeded my expectations. Professional, knowledgeable, patient, compassionate and down-to-earth are words I would use to describe attorneys Beth and Andrea. Their compassion proved invaluable at a time in my life when I needed it the most, providing necessary services and resources every step of the way. For the most part, I felt as though I was their only client! Timely responses, repeat questions answered and layman term explanations are all things I greatly appreciated. I also appreciated their three billing options. It made me feel more in control knowing I had a choice. Steering me in the right direction and keeping me grounded with realistic outcome expectations was also essential, especially when my emotions went into over-drive. They gave me confidence and restored my identity after it was stolen from me. I can't say enough good things about this law firm. Winning the Silver Award for the Star Tribune Reader's Choice "Minnesota's Best" was so well deserved!

I was impressed with Beth from the very beginning. As background I had spoken to another attorney prior to contacting Beth and had decided not to pursue the case. Several weeks passed and after speaking to a former colleague, was given Beth's contact info. My original intent in speaking to Beth was simply to help in narrowing a non-compete. During the conversation Beth picked up on several other cues to my situation that I hadn't overtly expressed, and asked more and more questions, digging further into the situation. Based on her skills in listening and ultimately questioning she uncovered the full story. Beth showed so much compassion and helped to validate the emotions I had been struggling with. She also shared that what was done was wrong and that I had a very valid case to pursue wrongful termination. Both Beth and Andrea were amazing to work with. They listened intently, invested time into learning the rules of my industry, and did an amazing job representing my situation in legal form. Seeing my story articulated in the letter to my former Employer was so healing to me. I felt validated! My case took a few months to resolve and I am very pleased with the outcome. Beth set realistic expectations from the beginning and kept me apprised along the entire journey. She has strong relationships and an excellent reputation in the legal community which I believe are critical in choosing a partner in situations like this. I highly recommend Bertelson Law!

I worked with Beth and Andrea recently to help me negotiate a severance agreement and really appreciated their expertise, counsel, and advocacy for me. They were thorough in their reviews and identified some very important areas of concern that we were successful in negotiating. I was impressed with their quick responsiveness given the relatively short timelines that we had to meet. In all, I felt great about the outcomes they helped negotiate, resulting in much more fair agreement despite not having a lot of leverage.

I wanted to share what a great experience I had with Beth and her great legal team. I came looking for employment law expertise after experiencing painful discrimination at my employer and was met with the understanding, comfort, attentiveness and most importantly, knowledge of employment law at Bertelson Law Office. After a positive settlement of my case, my emotional burden was lifted, and I left with the satisfaction that I stood up for my rights with the hopes that this will also serve others in a similar situation in the future. Thank you Beth! - RM

I retained Beth Bertelson with the support of Andrea Ostapowich three months ago, late February of 2020. I had a time sensitive matter that required immediate attention. Andrea was prompt in returning my initial inquiry (less than 24 hour turnaround). Her quick response was critical when searching for the "right" attorney. As a result, I not only retained Bertelson Law Office but I was able to schedule a face to face prior to the Pandemic shutting Minneapolis down. I had never retained legal counsel so I was extremely apprehensive and uneducated of the process. Thankfully Beth and Andrea walked me through it, with very much care and sensitivity. Beth is a compassionate attorney who takes the time to understand your situation. She will work with you to understand your objectives and provide you with realistic feedback after careful review of your claim. She is a Thought Leader in employment law and that became apparent very quickly. In addition, Beth's communication style was very easy and clear. I knew exactly when and what information Bertelson Law Office needed and when it was needed by. Her easy going but extremely professional disposition made my experience retaining legal counsel so much more meaningful. I am so so grateful for her taking my case and working with me the last three months. She and Andrea really made a very uneasy and stressful experience into one where I felt comfortable disclosing confidential information freely. Lastly, their overall approach to my case was precise. Their strategy was well thought through and when I asked for guidance they provided all viable options. I would most definitely recommend Beth and Andrea to anyone looking for a legal counsel.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
