Sara Nunley McDonough is a graduate of the University of Richmond Law School and is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia, Virginia, and U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Columbia. Sara represents private and public sector workers in state and federal court proceedings and before administrative agencies. She has obtained favorable settlements and outcomes for her clients in matters involving a wide variety of employment issues, including discrimination, reprisal, whistleblowing, due process, wrongful termination in violation of public policy, and wage and hour violations.

During law school, Sara's studies and work experience focused on the fields of employment law and employment discrimination law.  Ms. McDonough completed an externship at the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) field office in Richmond, VA.  She worked closely with an EEOC attorney and investigators on cases involving employment discrimination on the basis of religion, sexual harassment, race, color, and retaliation.  Additionally, Sara interned with the Disability Law Center of Virginia (formerly Virginia Office for Protection and Advocacy), an organization that advocates and provides legal services for persons with disabilities.

Prior to law school, Sara worked as a strategic communications consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean, VA.  She supported contracts with several large federal government clients, primarily the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and TRICARE, a U.S. Department of Defense Military Health System program.  During her engagement at the IRS, Sara helped develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy and outreach campaign for the Office of Cybersecurity.  While supporting TRICARE, she authored and edited more than 100 health care publications distributed to more than nine million health care beneficiaries and providers around the world.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:
Comfort Level - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
Credentials - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
Cost - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
City - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?
