Mike Powell is originally from Westminster, Maryland, moving to Charlotte County in 1988. He graduated from Port Charlotte High School in 1990 and the University of South Florida in Tampa with a Degree in Criminology in 1994.
Mike attended law school at Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson, Mississippi and graduated in 1997. While attending law school Mike' worked with the U.S. Attorneys Office in Jackson. MS as well as the Hinds County, Mississippi Public Defenders Office.
Admitted to the Florida Bar in 1997. Mike began working for the State Attorney's Office in Punta Gorda as Assistant State Attorney. Mike worked there from 1997 to 2005 and 2009 to May of 2010. The last 7 years with the office as a felony prosecutor handling every degree and type of felony offenses from homicides and DUI manslaughter cases to kidnappings and sexual battery. Mike spent over a year assigned to prosecute the sex offense and crimes against children docket in Charlotte County. From 2005 to 2009, Mike was a partner in a local firm which he helped start. While there he practiced predominantly In the areas of criminal defense and family law.
Mike is a member of the Florida Bar and the Charlotte County Bar where he is currently serving as the President of the Bar Association. He is a member of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. Mike is a member also of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
With over 20 years of trial experience both prosecuting and defending those accused of a crime. Mike has handled literally thousands of criminal cases over that time. His varied background and experience allows him to aggressively represent his clients yet at the same time bring an educated common sense approach to his work as well.
Mike also provides legal services in all matters related to the practice of family law from divorce to child custody and support to domestic violence.
Mike is local resident and local attorney who is invested in Charlotte County. He lives, works and raises his family in Charlotte County and cares deeply about the people of his community.
