Matt Evans advises on a wide range of EU and competition law matters, including merger reviews before the European Commission and the U.K. Office of Fair Trading and Competition Commission; reviews of and investigations into anticompetitive agreements and practices, including cartels and supply agreements; abuses of dominant positions; state aid; and EC free movement issues. Matt has considerable experience working with clients in the music, betting and gaming, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), agricultural, and financial services industries.

Matt's recent experience includes acting for Universal Music in successfully obtaining EC merger clearance for its acquisition of BMG Music Publishing and obtaining U.K. merger clearance for the acquisitions of a number of smaller recorded music and music publishing businesses. He advised Associated British Foods in its disposal of Abitec, its emulsifiers business, to Danisco (cleared by the European Commission) and the acquisition by AB Agri of several U.K. animal feed mills (including those owned by Primary Diets and JE Porter, both cleared by the OFT). In recent years, Matt has worked closely with the U.K. government and the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) to obtain EC state aid approval for new U.K. waste recycling aid schemes. He also has advised online betting and gaming companies, including Ladbrokes, regarding free movement disputes in several EU jurisdictions.

Matt regularly speaks at competition law seminars and conferences. Before joining Jones Day, he practiced for eight years in the EU & competition department at SJ Berwin's London office.
