Prior to joining Jones Day in 2009 and for the previous 30 years, Dr. Kurtha maintained his own private practice in Dubai — formerly in partnership with a retired Dubai judge and most recently with his own firm, Kurtha and Co. Dr. Kurtha practices a wide variety of commercial matters, including commercial litigation, maritime law, banking, property issues, and arbitration matters. He is licensed in Dubai and in England and practiced in London as a barrister under (now) Sir Stephen Sedley, Lord Justice of Appeal. During his time as a local practitioner, Dr. Kurtha has acted as local counsel for a number of reputed international law firms, including Jones Day. In maritime matters, he has acted for protection and indemnity clubs, which are associations of ship owner's insurers, such as Britannia, West of England, Skuld (of Denmark), and Gard (of Norway). In the litigation and arbitration arenas, he has worked closely with Arabic speaking advocates throughout the Gulf region, advising foreign clients of important day to day developments in litigation and arbitration matters and has acted before the new Dubai International Financial Centre Courts in commercial disputes. Dr. Kurtha also has acted for a number of banks, including CitiBank, HSBC, United Bank, Union Bank, and Gulf Bank, on a variety of matters arising in the Gulf region.

Dr. Kurtha has acted as a testifying legal expert in various disputes in Dubai and has provided legal opinions on local Dubai and U.A.E. laws regarding, among other things, project finance transactions, banking issues, enforceability of undertakings, and issues of sovereign immunity.

Dr. Kurtha has taught law to undergraduates in the U.K. at London University and Kingston University and has contributed to a number of academic law journals. In addition, he has served on a number of committees of the International Bar Association, including on maritime law issues and the international laws of art and heritage, and has written several books on art issues, including Art of Modern India (1998).
