Summary

Law Firm Overview

While working for a Fortune 500 company handling employee relations issues in a human resources capacity, Kendall Isaac soon realized that his job as an HR professional was more about covering the company's ASSets than ensuring that all employees were treated with dignity and respect. In fact, he was even criticized by one of his managers for siding with employees too often in disputes between employee and management. He was reminded that his performance review and ultimate success at the company would be based upon how the managers viewed him, not the employees. This realization prompted him to continue to develop as an HR professional during the day while attending law school in the evening developing a thorough understanding and concentration in labor and employment law.

After graduating from law school, his intent was to start his own law practice and work hard to ensure that the workplace would be one where everyone and not just upper management were treated with dignity and respect. However, while looking for a mentor to help him further develop his expertise, the gentleman he hoped would become his mentor actually offered him a job working for a large law firm doing mostly workers' compensation work on behalf of major corporations. He took this job in order to gain practical experience and things were going well until one particular workers’ compensation hearing that changed his life and path forever.

Going into the hearing, Mr. Isaac had reviewed the file and - although he thought the injured worker had a legitimate claim - he was being paid by this major corporation to do whatever it took to take away her benefits. At the hearing, Mr. Isaac gave an effective argument which ultimately ended in accomplishing his goal of stripping this elderly lady of her workers’ compensation benefits. But before he left the hearing, she stared him straight in the eye and with sorrow in her voice and tears flowing from her eyes said "How can you live with yourself doing this to people? How? Why?!"

Kendall did not sleep well that night, replaying what this lady had said to him over and over in his mind. By the next morning, he realized what he had to do. It was time he stopped hurting people and started helping them. He decided to start his own practice and instead of hurting people he set the goal of helping people to obtain their workers compensation benefits, their unemployment compensation benefits when terminated without just cause, and to receive compensation for being the victim of harassment and discrimination on the basis of age, race, sex, disability, religion and national origin.

The first thing Kendall learned as an entrepreneur was that the process of starting and running a small business is a very difficult one. With the help of his soon-to-be wife Cheryl E.C. Isaac, he was able to develop an effective business plan, meet with bankers and ultimately obtain a small business loan to get started. This experience led them to realize that people needed help not only in fighting against the suits of Corporate America but also needed help in transitioning from being a suit in Corporate America to becoming the backbone, heart and soul of America as a small business owner. This realization led to Cheryl also leaving the comfort of a corporate job and to venture into the world of entrepreneurship as Director of the Business Services Division of The Isaac Firm and as the Owner of Isaac Business Services (IBS).
