Michael Brown's practice focuses on advising banks and other financial institutions on contentious matters relating to financial structures and products, bribery and corruption, as well as regulatory investigations and enforcement. He advises on disputes concerning investment funds, syndicated facilities, asset-backed securities, and derivatives. Michael also advises on anti-bribery and corruption programmes and represents clients in contentious matters involving the Financial Services Authority and Serious Fraud Office. In addition, he advises on the recovery of funds lost through fraud and on anti-fraud policy and procedures.

Michael is advising an offshore hedge fund that has lost substantial assets in the Madoff fraud and a corporate borrower on the interpretation and interrelationship of facility, noteholder, and intercreditor agreements in a dispute over an asset disposal. Prior to joining Jones Day, Michael's experience included acting for UBS in Real Estate Opportunities Limited v. Aberdeen Asset Managers and Others, defending a claim arising out of the collapse of the split capital investment trust market, advising the London branch of a U.S. bank during an investigation into market abuse, and acting for a corporate lender under a syndicated facility in enforcing security overseas, which included challenging a Cayman Islands' Special Trusts (Alternative Regime) Law (STAR) trust.

Michael's recent speaking engagements have involved issues related to bribery and corruption and counterparty risk.

He is a qualified advocate with rights of audience in all courts and in all proceedings in England and Wales.
