Mr. Spellman was born in Los Angeles and raised in Culver City, CA. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, magna cum laude, and received his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School. While in law school, Mr. Spellman emphasized in both bankruptcy and labor & employment classes. Mr. Spellman was a competitor in the American Bar Association Negotiation Competition, and along with his team partner, was the first Loyola student to go to the national finals in this event. He was also president of the Loyola chapter of the Federalist Society, and presided over the most active chapter in the west coast during his final year in law school.

Additionally, Mr. Spellman was an extern at the Loyola Law School Center for Conflict Resolution, where he performed conciliations and mediations, and was entered on to the Los Angeles Superior Courthouse as a court panel mediator. Mr. Spellman put a focus on government employment while in law school, serving two terms as judicial extern for the Honorable Rita Miller of the Los Angeles Superior Courthouse, and as the law clerk for the Office of Region 31 of the National Labor Relations Board throughout his final year in law school.

Following law school and prior to opening Brand & Spellman with partner Donny E. Brand, Mr. Spellman was an investigator for the Department of Labor, investigating pension plans and other ERISA violations.

Mr. Spellman lives in Long Beach with his wife and three cats, and spends his free time reading and writing comic books, as well as supporting local live music acts.
