Lawyer Overview

Theresa Gu's practice focuses on patent and intellectual property-related issues. Prior to joining Jones Day, Theresa worked at VIA Technologies, a leading integrated circuit (IC) design house, where she focused on in-house patent prosecution and patent portfolio management. Her work concentrated on patents relating to microprocessor, graphics, and wireless communications IC. She worked on patent prosecution in the U.S., China, Taiwan, and Europe. She also provided internal intellectual property training and implemented internal intellectual property protection policies.

While earning her law degree Theresa worked as a law clerk at an Australian patent and trademark law firm from 2005 to 2007. During this time she handled patent litigation relating to mechanical patents at the Federal Court of Australia. Her work included infringement analysis and allegations preparation, discovery, evidence preparation, trial, and witness preparation. She also prosecuted trademark applications at the intellectual property office of Australia.

Prior to law school, Theresa was an electrical engineer. After receiving her master's degree in electrical engineering, she worked as a radio frequency (RF) project engineer at a networking equipment manufacturer. She received the dean's commendation in 2002 for her master's, and her studies were specialized in microwave and RF engineering. She also designed a high-frequency oscillator for her master's project, and her undergraduate thesis is entitled "Embedded Java Processor Instruction Simulator."
