Lawyer Overview
Tom Ritter advises IP clients in all areas of chemistry and related fields, in particular polymers and life sciences. Tom's experience includes drafting and prosecuting German, European, and international (PCT) patent applications, as well as representing clients in subsequent opposition proceedings. He also provides patentability, validity, freedom-to-operate, and infringement opinions and is involved in nullity and infringement proceedings.
Tom studied chemistry and biochemistry in Germany and in the United States. For his Ph.D. thesis, he explored different routes towards the inhibition of bacterial transglycosylase, synthesizing a new class of thiazolines as well as a library of vancomycin analogs. In this context, he participated in the development of a programmable one-pot method for the synthesis of oligosaccharides. Tom has been working in intellectual property law since 2003. Before joining Jones Day, he was an associate in the firm of Vossius & Partner in Munich.
