Lawyer Overview
Christopher Clay is an associate in the firm's Litigation Department, and a member of the firm's White-Collar Defense, Investigations & Corporate Compliance Practice Group. He joined Wiggin and Dana in 2007.
In white-collar matters, Chris represents individuals, corporations, and financial institutions in litigation, investigations, prosecutions and enforcement proceedings before the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the Department of Justice, state attorneys general, and other state and federal enforcement bodies. In 2008 Chris was part of the trial team for a CVS executive who faced 23 felony counts related to an alleged scheme to bribe a Rhode Island state senator. The federal criminal case was prosecuted by the Department of Justice's Public Integrity Division and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Rhode Island. After a month-long trial in federal court in Rhode Island, the jury acquitted their client on all counts. In 2008 and 2009 Chris completed secondments in the general counsel's office of an international investment bank, where he handled internal investigations and regulatory inquiries. Chris also has experience in matters involving export violations and bankruptcy proceedings relating to investment fraud.
Chris also works in the area of commercial litigation. He has defended a Big Four accounting firm in a case alleging accounting malpractice arising out of a controller's complex embezzlement scheme, and has worked on other matters relating to shareholder disputes in close corporations.
Chris received a B.A. cum laude from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in Japanese literature from Yale University. He earned his J.D. from Boston College Law School where he was an editor of the Boston College Law & Religion Symposium.
