Summary

Lawyer Overview

Jana Lauren Harris built her career as a trial attorney by combining expertise in entertainment law, criminal defense, and white collar crime, as well as being a trial consultant who is skilled in jury selection, mock trials and voir dire.  She uses this unusual combination of skills to select and prepare the most effective courtroom strategy and then deliver a powerful presentation in courtroom. One of her areas of focus is representing entertainers with a past history of criminal problems that impacts their career or new charges that are lodged against the entertainer. She assisted in the recent case involving the rap star, T.I.

As an entertainment lawyer, Ms. Harris represented clients ranging from Joe South to members of Lynard Skynard, the Byrds, Firefall and provided local Southeastern representation for the Rolling Stones and Foreigner.  She was one of the two attorneys responsible for writing the by-laws and lobbying the State Bar of Georgia to form an independent section on Sports and Entertainment Law.

Ms. Harris branched into aspects of Criminal Law while working under the tutelage of Edward Garland. She worked on U.S. v. Koscot Interplanetary, a trial which lasted nine months and included the Indictment against noted trial lawyer F. Lee Bailey. She forged a friendship and professional relationship with Bailey and worked for a time in his Boston office after he was dismissed out of that Indictment.

Since returning to the Garland firm, Ms. Harris worked on numerous Federal mail fraud, tax fraud, drug cases and cases involving media coverage such as the case lodged against the woman accused of assisting noted pornographer Michael Thevis escape from jail and the Heritage High School shooting. Also, she was a member of the Ray Lewis defense team.

She became a trial consultant by studying the issues surrounding jury selection, mock trials and voir dire.  She conducts these trial preparations within the Garland, Samuel & Loeb firm as well as for other noted criminal defense lawyers who seek her assistance. Recently, she wrote an article on how jurors' unsanctioned use of social media can sabotage a trial. In the article, she not only outlines the problem, but provides solutions on how lawyers can protect their clients from these damaging actions. (Full article available on Publications page.)

Additionally, Ms. Harris is a champion in highlighting the stigma of mental illness and how it is addressed within the prison system and society, and she has successfully defended those in need of alternative sentences. She devotes spare time to assisting various agencies having to do with the treatment of mental illnesses.

  • Currently representing Steve Iman, off-duty policeman, charged in Cobb County with multiple counts of aggravated assault stemming from a barroom shooting;
  • Dismissal of murder charge against Sandy Blome after battle concerning DNA issues and his mental illness;
