Law Firm Overview
Paul E. Deloughery is passionate about estate planning and asset protection and other issues important to families. He has practiced law since 1998, and has considerable experience in the areas of complex estate and asset protection planning, trust and estate administrations, and family law. Paul continues to study and remain current on the latest changes relevant to the complicated area of estate and asset protection planning for high net worth individuals.
Paul is a graduate of the Iowa College of Law (a top-20 law school). Though most people take three years to complete law school, Paul graduated with honors after just 27 months. During that time, he was an insurance law research assistant to Professor Alan Widiss and assisted in the preparation of revisions to Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Insurance (Anderson Publishing Company, 1985).
During law school, Paul also co-owned and operated a business. He was chief operating officer and part owner of a Medicare/Medicaid certified home health agency in southeastern Minnesota. This experience taught Paul much about running a business, including the importance of planning for disability and the intricacies of federal, state and local rules and regulations as they apply to regulated businesses such as health care providers.
During law school, Paul spent a semester in the Iowa Law Clinic where he represented handicapped clients and clients with AIDS in various legal matters, including eligibility for low-income housing funding, bankruptcy, and estate planning.
Now, Paul E. Deloughery, J.D., M.A., is an attorney in Phoenix, Arizona and is also admitted to practice in Minnesota. He focuses his practice on estate planning, probate and business law.
He has been a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, Minnesota State Bar Association, Arizona State Bar Association, Maricopa County Bar Association, American Bar Association, and the American Association for Justice, as well as various local bar associations.
He has given seminars on varied subjects, such as the following:
* 2004 continuing legal education presentation to the Phoenix, Arizona-based College of Estate Planning Attorneys, entitled The Skinny' on SCINs and Private Annuities. The course handouts included annotated documents.
* Rochester and Pine Island (Minnesota) Community Education, "How To Prevent Disinheritance of your Loved Ones."
* National Association of Insurance & Financial Advisors (Rochester, Minn. chapter), "How To Prevent Disinheritance of your Loved Ones."
* Pine Island (Minnesota) Community Education, "So I Have Become A Conservator or Guardian - Now What?"
* Pine Island (Minnesota) Community Education, "So I Have Become The Personal Representative of an Estate - Now What?"

On a personal note, Paul's father, Henry O. Deloughery, served 26 years in the Navy and served as permanent senior meteorologist on the U.S.S. Valley Forge during the Viet Nam War. He retired from the Navy as a chief petty officer. He subsequently became a realtor and real estate appraiser. Henry Deloughery died in 1984. Paul's mother, Grace L. Deloughery, RN, MPH, PhD, has worked in nursing for the past 40 years in addition to being a nursing professor and owner of a nursing home and home health agency Paul is married to Kristina M. Deloughery, a senior auditor at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale. They have one daughter, Brigid K. Deloughery.
Paul grew up in Winona, Minnesota and attended Cotter High School where he graduated with honors in 1985. During his Senior year, he served as Co-President of the Student Council and was elected as Student of the Year. That same year, Paul was selected as one of two representatives from Minnesota to play in the McDonald's All-American Marching Band, in which he played alto saxophone in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Rose Bowl Parade and Fiesta Bowl Parade.
Paul went through the Boy Scout program, and was named Gamehaven Council National Youth Representative in 1976. He earned the Eagle Scout award and the Order of the Arrow.
Paul's musical ability also extends into Scottish and Irish folk music. He began playing the bagpipes at the age of 8, and in 1983, he won the Fleadh Cheoil Na hEireann (the All-Ireland international music championship) on the bagpipes in Kilkenny City, Ireland. He has also published a collection of traditional Irish folk music entitled Sliabh Luachra on Parade. He has won many national competitions and continues to play today with the Mesa Caledonia Pipe Band in Mesa, AZ.
Paul attended the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington (the largest music school in the world), where he studied saxophone performance. He also completed the Honors Program and studied history, logic and philosophy. He graduated with Distinction and with Honors in 1989 with a double major in Music Performance and History. Paul then attended the University of Iowa School of Music where he studied saxophone and bassoon performance more extensively, and was a saxophone teaching assistant.
