Lawyer Overview
Erin Barnhart litigates civil, criminal, and constitutional matters at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal courts. While serving as a judicial clerk, Erin acquired familiarity with a wide array of substantive legal areas. Since joining Jones Day, her work has included drafting and opposing pleadings, discovery responses, pretrial and dispositive motions, and appellate briefs. She also has coordinated expert reports, lay and expert testimony, privilege logs, document reviews and productions, and trial exhibit lists; assisted in preparing for and defending numerous depositions; and managed an extensive database of discovery materials and research. Erin's experience spans substantive areas that include contract disputes, securities fraud, election law, and equal protection and due process claims. In addition, she has extensive experience with a multimillion dollar action alleging settlement fraud and involving insurance coverage disputes.
Erin's pro bono representations include multiple federal habeas corpus appeals in the Sixth Circuit and landlord-tenant matters in Ohio state court. She and her colleague Grant Garber were co-recipients of the Legal Aid Society of Columbus' 2007 Pro Bono Award for outstanding pro bono service through representation of a tenant in the Pro Bono Tenants' Advocacy Project.
Erin is author of "On the Fair Use Fence Between Derivative Works and Allegedly Infringing Creations: A Proposal for a Middle Ground," 80 Notre Dame L. Rev. 759 (2004). Portions of several original speeches Erin created for collegiate competition have been published in Principles and Types of Public Speaking (Raymie McKerrow, et al., 2003) and in Winning Orations (Larry Schnoor & Bruce Wickelgren, eds. 2000).
