Lawyer Overview

Neil Coulson works in all areas of intellectual property law. He has extensive experience in patent litigation and leads the trade marks group in Jones Day's London Office.

In patent matters, Neil has represented clients in many diverse industries, such as oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, electronics, chemical engineering, medical devices, and agrochemicals, before the Patents Court and Court of Appeal. Many of the patent cases he has handled for clients have involved the coordination of efforts across U.S. and European jurisdictions, and he has argued technical evidence before court-appointed experts in patent proceedings in Milan.

In trade mark matters, Neil represents clients in actions for trade mark infringement and passing off and advises on all aspects of trade mark prosecution at the UKIPO and the Community Trade Mark Office, regularly representing clients in oppositions and appeals. Furthermore, Neil advises extensively on copyright issues, particularly in the publishing and advertising industries.

In addition to litigating intellectual property rights, Neil advises on all aspects of the exploitation of intellectual property in the fields of licensing, technology transactions, and corporate mergers and acquisitions, with a particular focus on matters relating to sponsorship law.

Neil is recommended in Chambers UK and routinely lectures on a variety of legal topics and is widely published in industry journals on IP-related issues. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys.
