Lawyer Overview

Carlos is a member of the Firm's trial practice. His areas of experience include toxic torts/product liability, corporate criminal investigations, breach of contract, health care pricing, unfair business practices, and consumer credit. Carlos was a member of the Jones Day trial team that successfully defended Dole Food Company in Tellez v. Dole, et al. This was the first U.S. trial with Latin American plaintiffs claiming injury from exposure to the pesticide DBCP. The five-month trial involved Nicaraguan farm workers claiming sterility resulting from DBCP exposure. Carlos worked with attorneys in the Firm's Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, and New York offices and traveled to several Latin American countries to take and defend depositions and conduct legal analyses and fact investigations and worked with expert and fact witnesses to develop the successful defense used at trial.

Carlos was named a 2007 "Super Lawyer Rising Star" by Law & Politics and the publishers of Los Angeles Magazine. In addition to his client work, Carlos is active in recruiting and in coordinating the summer associate program in Irvine. He was a founding member of the California Associates' Round Table, an administrative commission on associate life for Jones Day's five California offices. Carlos was elected to the 2008-2009 board of directors of the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association. He also sits on the Orange County Diversity Task Force. Carlos is a mentor in a Los Angeles Bar Association program for students of an inner city high school.
