Lawyer Overview
Clients and other lawyers seek Alana Rotter out for her clear writing and efficient work. She enjoys grappling with a new set of facts or area of the law, and then translating it into a straightforward, coherent story. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley and Yale Law School, Alana clerked for the Honorable Kermit V. Lipez of the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. She then joined Irell & Manella, where she represented clients in both trial and appellate courts, and contributed to a monthly Daily Journal column on splits among the federal appellate circuits. Eager to focus more squarely on appeals, Alana joined GMSR in 2007. Alana handles all aspects of civil appeals and writ proceedings. That often means wading into a case early on, to advise trial counsel on how to preserve issues for appellate review or to assist with dispositive motions. Once a case is in the appellate courts, Alana is adept at drafting briefs, writ petitions, rehearing petitions, and petitions for review and certiorari. She also has successfully argued numerous cases before the California Courts of Appeal and the Ninth Circuit. Alana's has substantive experience across a wide range of legal subjects, including appellate procedure, employment law, trade secrets misappropriation, contract interpretation, marital dissolution, trust administration, and immigration. In her spare time, Alana enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter, traveling, reading, and solving crossword puzzles.
