Lawyer Overview
Ever since her days as a high school journalist, Alana Rotter enjoyed the challenge of gathering information, analyzing it, and then presenting it to readers in a clear and engaging form. She suspected that a career in the law would call upon many of the same skills, and has been delighted to have her suspicions confirmed in her work as a federal appellate clerk and in private practice.
Alana developed an interest in the law while attending U.C. Berkeley, where she took undergraduate courses in Constitutional Law and the First Amendment for her Political Science and Mass Communications majors, and at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where she studied Jewish law during a semester abroad. Following a fellowship in Washington, D.C. in which she developed curricula introducing teenagers to political and social justice issues, Alana attended Yale Law School and then went on to clerk for the Honorable Kermit V. Lipez of the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Alana became hooked on appellate law during her clerkship, relishing the opportunity to research and analyze a broad range of legal issues from criminal procedure and sentencing to equal protection and discrimination. After clerking, Alana pursued her interest in appellate law as an associate at Irell & Manella, working on briefs for the U.S. Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit, and the California Court of Appeal, and contributing to a monthly Daily Journal column on circuit splits. She joined GMSR in 2007 and looks forward to continuing her appellate practice at the firm.
