Dr. Chavous has been a member of the Intellectual Property Department of WilmerHale for over five years. He has gained experience drafting and prosecuting patents before the United States Patent Office in a variety of technologies, including medical devices, pharmaceutical chemistry, drug delivery, formulations, molecular biology and medical diagnostics. In addition, Dr. Chavous has experience prosecuting patents throughout the world.
Dr. Chavous has also participated in negotiating and drafting licensing agreements. These negotiations have been part of a global strategy to avoid litigation and obtain rights over certain patents and know-how, thereby allowing clients to innovate in these areas. Several of these representations have led to additional work such as mediations and revisions to past licensing agreements.
Dr. Chavous has been extensively involved in litigation matters. His litigation experience spans technologies from LEDs, database systems and small engines to active pharmaceutical ingredients. He has experience developing and implementing case strategies relating to validity and infringement. Dr. Chavous also has experience drafting briefs and legal memoranda on validity and infringement issues. Furthermore, he has experience preparing witnesses to testify at deposition and trial.
Prior to joining WilmerHale, Dr. Chavous worked at a global prior art search firm. Dr. Chavous earned a PhD in 2001, focusing his research on structural biochemistry and molecular biology. In particular, he devoted his energy to the elucidation of the functionality of a small protein required for the repair of damaged proteins in cells. During his PhD research, he was extensively involved in the crystallization and resolution of the structure of the protein, as well as the determination of the functional domains and the active site of the protein. While working with various other proteins in the lab, Dr. Chavous utilized known linker technologies for purification experiments and his enzymology work. Dr. Chavous has three publications covering his research and three abstract publications relating to presentations at conferences.
