Cristina Ashworth is a counsel in the firm's Litigation/Controversy Department, and a member of the Business Trial Group and the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group. She joined the firm in 2005.
Practice
Ms. Ashworth focuses on complex commercial litigation and has represented corporations in both state and federal court. She has been involved in virtually all aspects of civil litigation, including drafting briefs and pleadings, preparing written discovery, taking and defending depositions, and trial practice. Ms. Ashworth was previously with the United States Department of Justice, which she joined through the Attorney General's Honors Program. From 2002 to 2005, she served as a Trial Attorney in the Commercial Litigation Branch of the Civil Division. As a Trial Attorney, Ms. Ashworth defended federal agencies at both the trial and appellate level in cases involving issues of breach of contract, takings in violation of the Fifth Amendment, employment claims, government procurement and international trade. She was a member of two trial teams that defended the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development against Fifth Amendment takings claims brought as a result of the Emergency Low Income Housing Preservation Act of 1987 and the Low Income Housing Preservation and Resident Homeownership Act of 1990.Ms. Ashworth has also argued on numerous occasions before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Federal Claims.
Recent Highlights
Ms. Ashworth's recent experience includes:
- Represented the former owner of a major newspaper in a long-running dispute over ownership of the paper
- Represented a pharmaceutical company in a patent infringement action involving an ANDA Paragraph IV certification
- Represented a private airport manager in a business tort action, which resulted in dismissal of all claims on summary judgment on eve of jury trial
- Represented a real estate development company in a dispute over an option provision in a lease agreement
