Lawyer Overview

Leslie B. Overman is an associate with Foley & Lardner LLP, where he is a member of the Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Practice.

Prior to joining Foley, Dr. Overman was an attorney with a top-ranked international law firm and a biotechnology company. His experience includes providing clients with patent prosecution and counseling; preparing competitive patent landscape analyses, freedom to operate, patent invalidity and non-infringement opinions; and drafting partnering and licensing agreements. He has also worked on drafting master service, manufacturing, supply, clinical trial, nondisclosure, and material transfer agreements. In addition, Dr. Overman's experience includes assisting in patent litigation, and performing patent due diligence for financings and mergers and acquisitions.

Dr. Overman is chair-elect of the San Diego Chapter of the Licensing Executives Society and is co-chair of the Intellectual Property Committee for BIOCOM, a regional life science organization. He is also a regular contributor to Biocommunique, the online newsletter of BIOCOM, for the section IP Update.

Prior to his legal career, Dr. Overman was a scientific researcher for a variety of corporations and universities. His work included developing and validating DNA microarray technology; high-throughput gene expression analysis; and research and development of an anti-HIV antisense therapeutic. His research as an American Cancer Society Fellow included determining the molecular basis of human retrovirus (HTLV) infection. His doctoral thesis was on protein-nucleic acid thermodynamics.

Dr. Overman earned his J.D. from the California Western School of Law (2004). He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Ph.D. in biochemistry (1989) and holds a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (1982).

Dr. Overman is admitted to practice in California, and before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
