Lawyer Overview
Michael J. Harwin is senior counsel in Foley's General Commercial Litigation, Insurance and Reinsurance Litigation and Distribution & Franchise Practices. His practice focuses on complex civil litigation, reinsurance litigations and arbitrations, franchise disputes, and environmental disputes arising from the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).
Prior to joining Foley, Mr. Harwin was an associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in New York, where his practice focused on clients with complex commercial litigation matters, including the representation of a corporation involved in a hostile $8 billion tender offer.
Mr. Harwin was a judicial clerk for the Honorable Ellsworth Van Graafeiland, U.S. Court of Appeals – Second Circuit, and the Honorable Maurice M. Paul, U.S. District Court – Northern District of Florida.
Throughout his career, Mr. Harwin has dedicated considerable time to pro bono volunteer work. While in New York, he worked with inMotion, an organization that helps women obtain crucial legal protection for themselves and their families in Family Court, representing several women involved in custody disputes. Mr. Harwin has continued his volunteer work in Washington, D.C. with the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program, and has continued to represent women involved in custody disputes.
Mr. Harwin received his bachelor's degree in 1998 from Northwestern University in psychology. He received his J.D., with honors, in 2001 from the Emory University School of Law, where he was a managing editor for the Emory International Law Review.
Mr. Harwin is admitted to practice in Washington, D.C., New York, Georgia, and before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, the Southern District of New York, the District Court in Washington, D.C., the District of Maryland, and the Middle District of Georgia.
