As part of the firm’s ongoing strategy to grow our national and international intellectual property (IP) litigation practice, Lathrop & Gage opened an office in New York City in September, 2004 that is staffed by some of the top go-to talent in intellectual property in the country.  The office is headed up by William R. (Bill) Hansen, a former partner with Duane Morris LLP.  Bill Hansen is a nationally respected IP trial attorney, a friend and colleague of the firm who had previously worked with us on behalf of clients such as Payless ShoeSource.  Another key member of this office is Elizabeth Atkins who works with multinational clients and foreign counsel on international trademark matters and is active in the international trademark community. Bert Collison is a legend in this field, and he has practiced in this continually emerging area of law for more than 50 years.  The New York attorneys have worked on landmark trademark and false advertising cases involving such well-known brands as Thermos^®, Monopoly^®, Eveready Battery and Weight Watchers^®.  In fact, prior to Duane Morris, the core group of attorneys belonged to Nims Howes, the firm considered to have invented trademark law.  Nims wrote the first important treatise on trademark law in 1909 – Nims on Trademark and Unfair Competition, still cited in case work.
