Lawyer Overview

Jason Chen oversees the intellectual property practice in Jones Day's Taipei Office. He served as a Taiwan District Court judge for 10 years and presided over criminal and civil cases. In 2001, Jason was a visiting scholar at the New York University Law School, which was sponsored by Taiwan's Judicial Yuan. In 2002, he was certified as a professional intellectual property law judge by the Judicial Yuan in recognition of his accomplishments in IP law, including his master's thesis, graduate course work at Tokyo University, and his accumulated judgments in intellectual property cases.

Jason made a career switch to private law practice in 2003 when he joined a Taipei law firm that included foreign and Taiwanese lawyers. During this time he focused on international litigation and corporate and commercial transactions. With his experience as a judge, he led the litigation department of that firm, handling a wide range of cases involving international ship arrest, intellectual property infringement, public procurement, as well as cross-border litigations involving publicly listed companies in Taiwan and the U.S. Since joining Jones Day, Jason has continued to lead many efforts in representing clients on disputes over construction, intellectual property, products defects, insider trading, and white-collar crime.

Jason has served for many years on the Intellectual Property Protection and Licensing Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (AmCham) and has been co-chair of the committee since October 2005. He has been actively involved in the publication of AmCham's annual white paper, which contains important recommendations to the Taiwanese government on issues concerning intellectual property, trade, and commerce in general. Because of his familiarity with the judicial circles, he also plays a substantial role serving as the bridge between AmCham and the Taiwanese government authorities such as the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office and the Ministry of Justice.

Since 2005, Jason has served as a commissioner on the Intellectual Property Court Advisory Committee of the Judiciary Yuan and is involved in setting up the relevant organizational rules, reviewing the draft bill, and providing consultation from a practical perspective. He was also invited by the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan's legislature, to submit an expert opinion and report on the establishment of Taiwan's Intellectual Property Court.

Jason was elected a director of the IP Law Committee of the Taipei Bar Association in 2008. Since 2006, Jason has sat on the Intellectual Property Committee of the National Allied Association of Taiwan Lawyers and has been closely involved in the proposed amendment to the Patent Law and Trade Mark Law.

Jason is a member of the Taipei, Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Hsinchu Bar Associations and is an arbitrator of the Taiwan Arbitration Association.
