Schweitzer Scherr & Leichman practices in the District of Columbia and Maryland. Our law practice focuses on issues pertaining to family law, children, child serving nonprofit agencies, adult and child guardianships, charter schools and social work. The Firm engages in trial and appellate civil litigation.

SS& L has extensive experience in all aspects of adoption law including contested adoptions, step-parent and relative adoptions, private adoptions, foster parent adoptions and international and interstate adoptions. We also provide representation in cases of Wrongful adoptions when adopters claim that the adoption agency misrepresented the health or condition of the child.

SS&L also engages in nonprofit corporations law and with a concentration in nonprofit agencies that serve families and children. Such work involves risk management; liability; insurance; private-public joint ventures and contracting with the government, developing policies and procedures manuals; the impact of local and federal welfare law on agency practices and confidentiality. The Firm assists in the creation of child-placing agencies and nonprofits in general including obtaining federal and local tax-exempt status and obtaining the necessary licenses and permits to operate a child-placing agency.

SS&L also has expertise in domestic relations law involving divorce, child custody, support, property distribution and child support. The Firm works in areas of property settlement agreements, pre-nuptials, custody and child abuse and neglect matters. In addition to domestic cases SS&L handles adult and child guardianship cases.

SS&L provides advice and advocacy to social workers who are involved in licensing and disciplinary proceedings.
