Lawyer Overview
Alyssa Cunningham is an associate in the Health Care Department at the firm's Hartford office. She is a member of the Research Regulation and Compliance, Long-Term Care, Education and Tax Exempt Organizations Practice Groups. Alyssa’s practice focuses on regulatory health care issues including Medicare and Medicaid compliance and reimbursement, fraud and abuse, HIPAA and privacy law, and licensure matters. Her experience includes representing clients before the Department of Social Services and the Department of Public Health; advising on corporate compliance programs and other policies and procedures relevant to health care providers’ operations; drafting legislation; and obtaining regulatory approvals for changes of ownership and mergers.
Alyssa also advises a variety of non-profit tax-exempt organizations on corporate governance and federal and state tax exemption matters, and institutions of higher education on governance and regulatory issues affecting their operations. In addition, she counsels clients from a variety of industries on State lobbying, ethics, and campaign finance reform issues.
As a member of the Research Regulation and Compliance Practice Group, Alyssa works on a variety of research-related matters including clinical trial agreements, informed consent and conflicts of interest, and research billing compliance.
Alyssa serves on the University of Connecticut Health Center Institutional Review Board and is a member of the Applied Research Ethics National Association, the American Health Lawyers Association, the Connecticut Health Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association Health Law section. Alyssa co-authored "Fraud and Abuse in Clinical Research: Potential Pitfalls and Practical Measures for Avoiding Them," Association of Healthcare Internal Auditors, New Perspectives (Spring 2005), "Research Compliance Q&A: Investigator-Initiated Clinical Research Studies," Association of Healthcare Internal Auditors, New Perspectives, (Summer 2006), and "Research Compliance Q&A: Focus on HIPAA," Association of Healthcare Internal Auditors, New Perspectives, (Winter 2006).
Alyssa received her B.A. in Geology cum laude in 1998 from Skidmore College, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and her J.D. cum laude in 2003 from Albany Law School of Union University, where she was the Managing Editor of Lead Articles for the Albany Law Journal of Science and Technology.
