Lawyer Overview
Greg Porter has extensive experience representing and advising companies in all aspects of patent and trade secret law, including acting as lead counsel in successful jury trials and preliminary injunction hearings, as well as advising on patent procurement and designing around competitor's patents. Greg also has counseled Fortune 500 clients on the creation and management of their patent portfolios.
Over the years Greg has successfully litigated cases in a diverse range of technologies from oil field tools to polymers and computer networking. Greg has drafted and prosecuted polymer, pharmaceutical, chemical, petrochemical, biotech, and mechanical patents. He also has prepared and supervised the preparation of infringement, validity, and freedom-to-operate opinions. In 2005, Greg successfully defended Dyna-Drill Technologies in a 13-day jury trial against a damages claim by Kennametal of nearly $60 million for alleged trade secret misappropriation, tortious interference, and breach of contract.
Greg regularly speaks and writes on litigation and intellectual property issues. He is an author of "The Inevitable Disclosure Doctrine and its Effect on Employee Mobility," 44 Houston Lawyer 36, 37 (Nov./Dec. 2006) and a coauthor of "Willful Infringement: Allegations, Implications, and Practical Considerations," presented at the AIPLA Advanced Patent Litigation Seminars in June 2003. Greg spoke on "Patent Litigation Practical Tips on Budgeting, Use of Experts, and Mock Juries," at a July 2003 Indianapolis CLE program. Greg is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Intellectual Property Owners Association, the Houston Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Houston Bar Association.
