Mark Bieter is a counsel in the firm's Litigation/Controversy Department, and a member of the Business Trial Group and the Government and Regulatory Litigation Practice Group. He joined the firm in 2001.

Practice

Mr. Bieter’s practice involves general litigation in various federal and state trial and appellate courts. He has represented plaintiffs and defendants in a broad range of civil litigation matters, ranging from a lawsuit on behalf of Central and South American corporate clients to an adoption case for an individual family on a pro bono basis. Mr. Bieter has been involved in virtually all aspects of civil litigation, including discovery, pre-trial practice, post-trial proceedings, appeals and settlement. In addition, Mr. Bieter has assisted companies with mediation, internal corporate investigations and enforcement matters before state and federal regulators.

Recent Highlights

Mr. Bieter’s recent matters include:

• Obtained the Maryland Court of Special Appeals’ affirmance of the dismissal of litigation brought against a United States automobile manufacturer;
• Obtained the United States District Court for the District of Western Washington’s dismissal of a lawsuit brought against a financial services company;
• On behalf of a pro bono client, obtained a favorable settlement with Anne Arundel County, Maryland, that led to an investigation of the County’s 911 emergency system;
• Obtained the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio’s dismissal of a putative class action based on the Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act;
• Ongoing representation of a financial services company in a putative class action challenging mutual fund revenue arrangements.

Other Professional Experience

Mr. Bieter was an associate editor for Union of Asian News in Hong Kong and Bangkok, Thailand, and served as a legislative assistant and assistant press secretary to US Rep. Larry LaRocco. He co-authored Enduring Legacy: The Story of Basques In Idaho (University of Nevada Press 2000).
