Dr. Hans-Werner Moritz specializes in the areas of information technology, telecommunications, e-commerce, data protection, and antitrust law. He has many years of extensive experience in legal advice in the computer, software, telecommunications, and Internet industries.

Dr. Moritz became nationally and internationally recognized while serving as lead counsel in the CompuServe case concerning an Internet service provider's liability for foreign content. In this 1999 case, Dr. Moritz obtained one of the first judgments based on Section 5 of the German Teleservices Act (TDG).

Furthermore, Dr. Moritz is an authority in the areas of information technology and telecommunications outsourcing; system integration; software development, licensing, and maintenance; Internet telephony; Internet platforms; data protection; and abusive practices/antitrust law. He is listed in Chambers Global — The World's Leading Lawyers (2003-2007).

Prior to joining Jones Day, Dr. Moritz managed the Munich office of the Graf von Westphalen Bappert & Modest law firm. He began practicing as a lawyer in 1970 at the Deutscher (German) Investment Trust in Frankfurt, where he worked intensely with the rights of financial investment management companies, and thereafter resumed his work as permanent legal adviser at IBM Deutschland GmbH in October 1970. At IBM he quickly assumed managerial duties in the law departments of IBM Germany and IBM Europe as, among others, general counsel of areas division and as senior counsel advising on the distribution of mainframes and system software. In 1995, Dr. Moritz left IBM to become partner at the law firm of Beiten Burkhard Mittel & Wegener in Munich, and from there he moved to Graf von Westphalen Fritze & Modest in 1999 as a partner.

Dr. Moritz is fluent in German, English, and French. He is the author of numerous publications in the field of commercial law, in particular computer, telecommunications, and Internet law as well as antitrust law. He is a member of the German Association for Law and Informatics (DGRI), the German National Committee of Comparative Law, and the Cartel Law Academic Society.
