Lawyer Overview
John Hagan is a commercial trial lawyer with a broad-based and diverse litigation practice in state and federal trial and appellate courts and before arbitration panels in Texas and throughout the United States. He has first-chair trial court experience in state and federal courts. He also has appellate experience gained through briefing and arguing before the Fifth Circuit, the Texas Supreme Court, and the Texas courts of appeals.
During the past 16 years John has represented and counseled clients in litigation matters involving business and contract disputes, fraud and deceptive trade practices, defamation and business disparagement, trade secret and trademark infringement, employment and civil rights, product liability claims, wrongful death and serious personal injury cases, toxic tort, bankruptcy, pipeline regulatory matters, arbitration, and large contractual indemnity and insurance coverage disputes. His practice primarily involves assisting clients in the oil, natural gas, and oil field services industries. His personal injury, property damage, and product liability litigation experience includes extensive responsibility in cases arising out of oil and gas exploration, production, and refining activities that have involved oil well blowouts, fires, and explosions. He has focused in recent years on representing general contractors and policyholders in complex contractual indemnity and insurance coverage disputes arising out of work orders and master service agreements. He has presented training to his clients on how to recognize and manage contractual and insurance risk transfer opportunities. Representative clients include Union Pacific Railroad, BP, Halliburton, Crown Central Petroleum, Unocal, and Hanson America.
John is a member of the State Bar of Texas and is admitted to practice before all federal courts in Texas as well as the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has also appeared before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. John is a member of the American, Texas, and Houston Bar Associations as well as a Fellow of the Houston Bar Foundation.
