Lawyer Overview
Jean-Paul focuses his practice on commercial and securities litigation as well as white-collar criminal defense. He has defended several class actions and has considerable experience with accounting and securities fraud cases and commercial contract disputes. Jean-Paul frequently represents companies and individuals being investigated by the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission and has also successfully defended clients being investigated by the Department of Energy, the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division, the Department of the Treasury, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Association, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division. He has handled a wide variety of white-collar crime cases, including cases involving antitrust violations, bribery of public officials, defense contractor fraud, false claims, insider trading, mail and wire fraud, securities fraud, tax fraud, public corruption, and unlawful campaign contributions.
Prior to joining Jones Day in 2001, Jean-Paul served for four years as an officer in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps. While stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), he tried 50 courts-martial and separation boards, acted as the operational law advisor to the 502nd Infantry Regiment in the field, and reached the rank of captain. Jean-Paul also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Orinda D. Evans of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia for one year after graduating from law school, thus gaining familiarity with federal civil and criminal trial practice early in his career.
Jean-Paul is a member of the Atlanta Bar Association and is admitted to practice before the Georgia and District of Columbia Courts of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Georgia, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. He has been named a "rising star" in business litigation and white-collar criminal defense by Georgia Super Lawyers.
Jean-Paul is active in the Atlanta community, where he serves on the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce's Atlanta Public Schools Committee, the Fernbank Museum of Natural History's Corporate Leadership Council, and Washington & Lee University's Atlanta Alumni Association board of directors. He is also the hiring partner for the Atlanta Office.
