Nicolas was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and raised in Thousand Oaks, California. He graduated in 1996 from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology with a minor in Mathematics. Nicolas received his Juris Doctor Degree from Loyola Law School in 2000. While in law school, he completed an externship with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, Criminal Division. He was certified by the California State Bar and individually tried two-jury trials and twenty-one bench trials.

After Law School, Nicolas became an associate attorney with Kern & Wooley LLP, an AV-rated firm specializing in insurance coverage, bad faith, anti-trust, aviation, products liability and other general liability matters. Then, in 2003, he formed Adams Noblin Vrataric LLP, in Ventura, California, a law firm specializing in employment law, consumer rights, personal injury, construction defect and representation of Homeowners Associations. There. he tried two-jury trials, in addition to numerous arbitrations and administrative law hearings.

In 2006, Nicolas opened his own law firm called the Law Offices of Nicolas C. Vrataric in Oxnard, California, focused on representing individuals in matters of employment discrimination and harassment, consumer rights and serious personal injury.

Nicolas was admitted to the California State Bar in 2000. He is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court, Northern, Southern, Eastern and Central Districts of California. Nicolas is a member of the California State Bar, Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, Consumer Attorneys of California, California Employment Lawyers Association, and the National Institute of Trial Advocates.
