William Betz, with 25 years of experience, provides a full range of legal services to individuals in the New York Metropolitan area.  Mr. Betz specializes in litigation.

Mr. Betz is admitted to practice law in the New York State courts, in the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, in the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Ninth Circuit and in the United States Supreme Court.

The Betz Law Office provides legal services in matrimonial and family law, including divorce, separation, custody, and issues relating to support and maintenance.   William Betz also has extensive experience in civil and criminal litigation, real estate, wills and decedent's estate litigation, corporate law and business partnerships.  Mr. Betz has handled numerous cases in the areas of contracts, personal and business torts, civil rights, corporate dissolution, employment law, Federal constitutional law, estate litigation, and international business transactions. He is an experienced trial lawyer in both jury and non-jury cases.

Mr. Betz similarly has extensive experience in appellate practice in the New York and Federal courts.

An honors graduate of New York Law School where he was a member of the New York Law School Review, Mr. Betz worked for the prestigious New York City law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore while attending law school. He associated after graduation with Weil, Gotshal & Manges in New York and with several smaller firms in New York City and Long Island before opening his own law office in 1987.

From 1999 until 2001 William Betz was responsible for civil litigation as Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, stationed in Saipan, where he was also called upon to participate in high-profile criminal prosecutions.  From 2006 until 2008 Mr. Betz handled general litigation, with an emphasis in health care law, for a small New York City law firm. 

Representative Litigation

In the area of matrimonial and family law, William Betz has successfully represented clients in high-profile divorces involving substantial assets. He has also had unique success in representing fathers in custody proceedings in the Supreme Courts and Family Courts of the State of New York.

Mr. Betz has represented corporations in contract disputes and in dissolution proceedings. The businesses he has represented include small, privately owned corporations and partnerships engaged in a variety of industries, including the film and videotape industry, brokerage, food services, printing, products sales and distribution, real estate, automobile sales and leasing, and dry cleaning, among others.

In addition, Mr. Betz has significant experience in representing disaffected shareholders in privately held, "close" corporations who seek to protect their rights after being frozen out of the business or otherwise oppressed by the controlling shareholders.

Mr. Betz has also represented clients in the federal courts seeking to protect or vindicate their rights by means of civil rights litigation against both the local (state and city) and federal governments.

In addition, Mr. Betz has successfully represented business executives and employees in contractual employment disputes and employment discrimination matters in the federal and state courts and before governmental administrative agencies.

William Betz has represented beneficiaries in estate and life insurance litigation in the New York Surrogates and Supreme Courts.

Other experience includes the representation of clients in securities arbitration before the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), personal injury matters, professional (medical and legal) malpractice litigation, immigration litigation, bankruptcy litigation and criminal defense.
