Lawyer Overview
Lisa J. Acevedo is a partner in the Health Care Industry Team of Foley & Lardner LLP and co-chairs the Team's Provider Operations Work Group. She is also a member of the Privacy, Security & Information Management Practice and Life Sciences Industry Team. She provides regulatory and transactional advice and general counsel to clients representing virtually all aspects of health care.
Ms. Acevedo counsels clients on compliance with statutes and regulations impacting companies doing business in the health care industry, including the Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark, the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and implementing regulations, including the Prescription Drug Marketing Act. She also provides advice on related guidelines including the OIG Compliance Program Guidance for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and the PhRMA Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals.
Ms. Acevedo provides strategic counsel in the areas of federal health privacy laws, including HIPAA, FERPA, Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Records, as well as state laws governing the confidentiality of health information, medical records, mental health records and records containing other highly sensitive information. She provides guidance and counsel on privacy and security issues faced by clients as they implement interoperable electronic medical records systems and other technology involving health information.
Ms. Acevedo has written several articles and delivered a number of speeches on privacy and security matters, including HIPAA compliance, as well as health care fraud and abuse, Stark, tax-exempt issues, and FDA issues. She has been an adjunct instructor of health law at Benedictine University in its Master's in Public Health graduate program.
Prior to joining Foley, Ms. Acevedo was corporate counsel for Baxter International, Inc., where she had primary responsibility for advising and assisting two divisions of the company in FDA compliance issues. She was also designated Baxter's privacy leader, with principal responsibility for advising on privacy, including U.S. and international privacy legislation. In this role, she helped to create and implement the company's Privacy and Security Program on a global basis. As corporate counsel, Ms. Acevedo also advised all divisions of the company in Medicare/Medicaid fraud and abuse issues.

Ms. Acevedo serves as the chair of the Latina Lawyers Committee within the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois. She is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association.
Ms. Acevedo received her law degree, with honors, in 1995 from DePaul University College of Law and was admitted to the Order of the Coif. She was a member of the DePaul University Law Review, a case-note editor of the Journal of Health and Hospital Law, and an article and note editor of the DePaul Business Law Journal. She received her undergraduate degree from Loyola University of Chicago.
