Lawyer Overview

Timothy Maples is senior counsel with Foley & Lardner's Transactional & Securities Practice and a member of the firm's Sports Industry Team. Mr. Maples has significant experience in structuring and negotiating complex business transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, cross-border transactions, and reorganizations. In addition, Mr. Maples is experienced in legal opinion practice and in the negotiation and drafting of employment agreements, confidentiality agreements, and non-competition agreements.

Mr. Maples has actively participated in transactions involving companies from a variety of industries, including information technology, aerospace, healthcare and medical devices, real estate, hospitality, industrial coatings, sports, telecommunications, and transportation.

Prior to joining Foley, Mr. Maples was a senior corporate associate in Washington, D.C., with a large Washington-based, international law firm, where his practice focused on mergers and acquisitions, real estate investment trusts, cross-border transactions, venture capital transactions, joint ventures and public and private company reorganizations. Mr. Maples began his legal career as an associate in Cleveland, Ohio, with the corporate and securities group of a large Cleveland-based, international law firm, where his practice focused on venture capital transactions, cross-border transactions, joint ventures, corporate governance, and securities offerings.

During 2003-2005, Mr. Maples left his law practice to serve as a volunteer for the United States Peace Corps in Thailand. As a business development volunteer, he advised and collaborated with sub-district government officials regarding development policy, drafted project plans and grant proposals to obtain funding for various efforts, provided basic computer and English instruction, and assisted community members in connection with several local initiatives.

Mr. Maples is a graduate of Northwestern University and Northwestern University School of Law. During law school, he was president of the Black Law Students Association and volunteered with a number of youth programs.

Mr. Maples' extensive record of community involvement includes membership on the board of directors of the United Way of the National Capital Area, where he was vice-chair of the Ethics Committee and a member of the Community Impact Committee. Mr. Maples has also served on the board of trustees of the American Sickle Cell Anemia Association, the Montgomery County United Way Executive Board, the Montgomery County United Way Community Services Fund Committee, the United Way of Greater Cleveland Fund Allocation Board, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts Development Council and as a volunteer with the District of Columbia Road Show program.

Mr. Maples is a member of the District of Columbia and Ohio (inactive) Bars, the American Bar Association, the Northwestern University Law Alumni Association and the Northwestern University Alumni Admission Council.

Mr. Maples is proficient in Thai.
