Lawyer Overview

Igor Makarov concentrates on cross-border transactions involving Russia. He has significant experience in a wide range of transactional and regulatory matters particularly in the energy area. From 1999 to 2003, he served as general counsel of BP Russia and later was head of the corporate legal department of TNK-BP. His transactional experience includes leading the TNK-BP team in negotiating the split of Slavneft; work on the acquisition by TNK-BP of 50 percent interest in TNK-TEXACO Lubricants from ChevronTexaco; merger of BP p.l.c. with Amoco and Arco; acquisition of Castrol; dissolution of BP-Mobil pan-European retail joint venture; and reorganization of BP's retail operations in Russia. His most recent experience includes representation of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft in connection with its Russian Regional Jet project and TNK-BP in connection with the Kovykta gas project.

Prior to his work at BP and TNK-BP, Igor was in-house counsel with Conoco International Petroleum Company where he was involved in the negotiations of the Shtokman Gas Field PSA with Gasprom on behalf of Conoco, Total, Neste, and Norsk Hydro and represented Conoco in negotiations of the Northern Territories' PSA with LUKOIL. In 2001, Igor was named among the "10 Best Corporate Lawyers in Russia" by Career Journal.
