Practice

Brian Markovitz is a partner in our Litigation Group with a focus on civil litigation, employment, and False Claims Act (qui tam) cases. Mr. Markovitz has practiced throughout the state of Maryland, including oral arguments before the Maryland Court of Appeals and Maryland Court of Special Appeals, in the United States Fourth Circuit, in the District of Columbia, and in several administrative agencies, including the Merit Systems Protection Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Division of Appeals at the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, and the Board of Trustees of the Maryland Retirement and Pension Agency.  Mr. Markovitz has also testified before the Maryland House Economic Matters and the Senate Finance Committees on employment legislation.

Notable decisions in which Mr. Markovitz participated, include Gillison v. Prince George's County, Maryland, September Term, 2003, No. 01698 (Md. Ct. Spec. App. 2003); Pineau v. Encore Marketing Int., Inc., September Term, 2002, No. 00854 (Md. Ct. Spec. App. 2003); Simms v. Bruce, 104 Fed. Appx. 853 (4th Cir. 2004); Selig v. State Highway Administration, 383 Md. 655, 861 A.2d 710 (2004); Doe v. Md. Bd. of Soc. Workers, 384 Md. 161, 862 A.2d 996 (2004); Holloman v. Circuit City Stores, Inc., 162 Md.App. 332, 873 A.2d 1261 (2005); Mayne v. Dennis Stubbs Plumbing, Inc., 2006 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 51551 (D. Md. July 13, 2006); Montgomery County v. Glenmont Hills Assocs., 402 Md. 250, 936 A.2d 325 (2007); Smith-Thompson v. District of Columbia, 657 F. Supp. 2d 123 (D.D.C. 2009); United States ex rel. Head v. Kane Co., 2009 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 105674 (D.D.C. November 12, 2009).

Education

Mr. Markovitz is a 1993 graduate of Dickinson College with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Philosophy. He is a 2000 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center.

In June 2000, Mr. Markovitz published Public School Teachers as Plaintiffs in Defamation Suits: Do They Deserve Actual Malice? in the Georgetown Law Review. He also received the American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law Award for Excellence for the highest grades in labor and employment law for the 2000 graduating class at Georgetown University Law Center.
