Lawyer Overview

John is a shareholder in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association. He is based in our Minneapolis office and is a member of the Labor and Employment Law Section. He practices principally in the areas of:

  • Traditional labor
  • Employment litigation
  • Employment advice and counsel
John represents public and private sector clients in a wide range of labor and employment matters. He provides advice and counsel on labor and employment issues including employment discrimination, non-competes, occupational safety and health, union organizing, and labor relations. John takes pride in helping clients reduce their risk of becoming involved in costly employment-related lawsuits.

John helps non-union clients stay union-free and represents union clients in labor arbitration and contract negotiations, and before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). John has also appeared on behalf of clients before the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, the Iowa Civil Rights Commission, the Wisconsin Equal Rights Division, Minnesota OSHA, state and federal departments of labor, and state and federal courts.

He takes an active role in the small business community and devotes a great deal of time and effort working with the Metropolitan Economic Development Association (MEDA). In addition to providing counsel to minority entrepreneurs referred by MEDA, John has worked with the organization to provide business law seminars geared toward the needs of small business owners and budding entrepreneurs. For his efforts, MEDA recognized John as “Volunteer of the Year” in 2000. In addition, John was recently named a 2006 “Rising Star” by Minnesota Law & Politics.

John received his bachelor’s degree in history from Carleton College and a master’s degree in history from Pennsylvania State University. From 1995 to 1999, he attended the Law School and Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, where he received his law degree cum laude and a master’s degree in industrial relations.

While at the University of Minnesota, John served as a research assistant in the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Policy’s Center for Labor Policy. He also interned at Region 18 of  the National Labor Relations Board. John joined Briggs in 2006.
