Lawyer Overview

Aleya is Of Counsel in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association. She is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) with more than 16 years of experience assisting business clients in protecting their intellectual property assets. Aleya is a member of the Business Law Section and Intellectual Property Practice Group, and practices principally in the areas of:

  • Patent prosecution
  • Patent portfolio management
  • Intellectual property agreements
  • Trade secrets
  • Infringement/invalidity opinions
Aleya brings unique perspective to Briggs' intellectual property team—she has worked as a patent examiner for the USPTO, and has both in-house and law firm experience. From 1992 to 1999, Aleya served as in-house patent counsel at The Pillsbury Company. Prior to joining Briggs in 2008, she had spent almost a decade practicing with other law firms in the Twin Cities.

In her practice, Aleya works closely with clients on a wide variety of intellectual property matters, including the drafting and prosecuting of U.S. and foreign patent applications, formulating patent filing strategies, the preparation of infringement and invalidity opinions, negotiating numerous types of agreements (secrecy, consulting, license, joint development, supply, etc.), performing due diligence for acquisitions and divestitures, and providing litigation support for patent lawsuits. In addition, Aleya regularly counsels large and small companies on developing trade secret training programs for personnel.

Aleya has drafted and prosecuted patents in the consumer food product, consumer healthcare, medical device, packaging and polymer chemistry categories.

Aleya is admitted to practice in Minnesota and the USPTO. She is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) and the Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA). She is also a member of Twin Cities Diversity in Practice. She is proficient in German and has limited proficiency in Bengali.

Aleya received her B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Illinois and her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. While attending law school, she was a member of the Giles S. Rich Intellectual Property Moot Court.
