Mercedes Fernández joined Jones Day in 2000 and oversees the Madrid Office litigation and arbitration practice.

Her practice is focused on civil law procedure, encompassing arbitral and judicial proceedings. Her litigation experience is centered on disputes arising from construction contracts and large civil engineering projects, construction defects, energy projects, distribution, and merger and acquisition transactions.

Mercedes has participated in judicial proceedings before the Spanish courts at all levels, including the Supreme Court. She has also acted as counsel in national and international arbitral proceedings, including ad hoc and institutional arbitrations. Her extensive experience in arbitration includes proceedings governed by ICC and UNCITRAL Rules as well as those dealing with investment issues and administered by the World Bank (CIADI). She also works in the area of civil and commercial law, including construction, corporate matters, and acquisitions.

After obtaining her law degree, Mercedes held a professorship at the University of Oviedo from 1982 to 1985, where she taught private international law. In 1985, she joined the Madrid firm of J. y B. Cremades as an associate and, in 1993, together with four other lawyers, founded the firm of Tena, Muñoz y Asociados.

Mercedes is a board member of the Madrid Arbitration Club, which was recently formed to promote Madrid as a seat of international arbitration.
