Lawyer Overview
R. Scott Downing is a skilled trial lawyer who has tried a number of complex high dollar property and custody cases. While recognizing that not all cases are best served by resolving them in the courtroom, Scott has also opened his practice to the use of Collaborative Law. He has written extensively for national and statewide publications on various Family Law topics, including complex characterization issues, advanced evidence issues, attorney ad litem practice, jurisdictional conflict, trial presentation and hidden asset cases in preparation for temporary hearings. Scott's articles have been published by the State Bar of Texas, The Journal of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists. He also has spoken on Family Law and evidentiary topics to numerous groups and organizations. Scott has earned recognition on every Texas Super Lawyers listing and has been recognized in Best Lawyers in America. Prior to joining the firm in 1995, Scott practiced law in Austin. Scott received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas in 1988. He studied law at the University of Houston Law Center, where he received the American Jurisprudence Awards in contracts and civil trial advocacy. He also served as Associate Editor of the Houston Law Review and graduated in 1991. Scott currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists and is also a member of the State Bar of Texas Family Law Council. He was recently appointed to serve on the District 1A Grievance Committee. Scott is married to Maureen Downing. They have four children, Ryan, Kaleigh, Park, and Will.
