Lawyer Overview

Ann practices intellectual property law with an emphasis on patent procurement and global IP strategy. She has more than seven years of legal experience in the life sciences industry and is familiar with many technical areas including molecular biology, genomics and proteomics, cancer therapeutics, vaccines, stem cells, gene therapy, transgenic plants and animals, nutritional supplements, herbal extractions, drug formulation and delivery, diagnostic test kits, and medical devices. Her clients range from large pharmaceutical companies to universities, research institutions, and small biotech start-ups.

As an experienced patent prosecutor, Ann has conducted inventorship and patentability analyses, drafted patent applications, responded to office actions and appeal briefs, and attended interviews at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and oral hearings at the European Patent Office. Ann also has provided legal opinions regarding patent validity, patent infringement, and freedom-to-operate issues. In addition, she has participated in U.S. interference and European opposition proceedings and in patent litigation involving pretrial factual discovery and the research and drafting of legal memorandum, motions, and replies. Ann is also proficient in IP due diligence, license agreements, collaborative research agreements, and confidential disclosure agreements.

Prior to joining Jones Day's New York Office in January 2004, Ann worked at the New York office of Pennie & Edmonds LLP as a summer associate in 2000 and as an associate from September 2001 through December 2003. Ann previously worked at Jones Day's Munich Office from January through March 2007 and recently relocated to Jones Day's Shanghai Office.

Ann is a member of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association. She is involved in the Firm's Patent Prosecution Committee and gives talks on patent law issues. Recently, she spoke about the impact of the KSR decision on the procurement and defense of pharmaceutical and medical device patents in the United States. Ann is fluent in English, Mandarin, and Taiwanese.
