Lawyer Overview

Marianne Chao's practice encompasses a broad range of construction and infrastructure projects, complex and multijurisdictional arbitration and litigation, and intellectual property.

Marianne represented the Taiwan Construction Industry Association in obtaining a favorable ruling on the effect of the no-delay-damage clause, which was a breakthrough development in construction contracts. She was the lead counsel representing Matra Transport in several highly publicized cases where she successfully countered court actions brought by the government of the Republic of China to set aside or prevent the enforcement of an arbitral award in the amount of NT$2 billion. Marianne also has advised on construction projects for China Petroleum, Chunghwa Telecom, CKS Airport Link, Taipei MRT, Taipei 101, Taipower, Taiwan High Speed Rail, and Taichung MRT.

In the area of intellectual property, she has represented clients in structuring and defending copyrights, trademarks, and patent infringement cases. She also represented a well-known international soft drink company in important litigation against parallel importers and received the first favorable judgments ever in Taiwan for such a case.

Marianne also represents clients in corporate disputes between shareholders and in issues related to corporate governance and is experienced in representing clients in litigations and arbitrations involving multiple jurisdictions.

Marianne has served as an arbitrator in arbitrations conducted in accordance with the Taiwan Arbitration Act and the ICC Rules of Arbitration. She is an executive director of the Taipei Bar Association and has served as a director of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (Taiwan, Republic of China chapter) for many years.
